Train Platform Foundation at Little Etna Pond

The TRAIN PLATFORM foundation is adjacent to the path to the water on the pond side of the train tracks. The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad was a significant railroad in northern Maine incorporated in 1891. The Camp Etna train stop was not mentioned in our programs after 1956. The BAR was purchased in 1995 by Maine Central and BAR was phased out until it filed for bankruptcy in 2003.

And now, if you look back up the hill towards camp, here is a photo of the entrance for people getting off of the train. The cost was 10 cents but that paid for the whole two weeks.

As it says in the 1890 program:

Camp Etna is 17 miles from Bangor, on the line of the M.C.R.R. All local trains will stop at the platform at the foot of the grounds, to take and leave passengers and baggage.

As you stand here now, amongst all the trees, look at the photo on the sign, or below the writing on this page. You will notice there are no trees lining the pond. The area must have been cleared for the platform. What a captivating scene that greeted the summer season attendees.
